Sovereign Grace Kids has released Awesome God, a worship album for children and youth. It is available at the Sovereign Grace Store for $14.00. I highly recommend it.
This album is a great tool for child evangelism. Children are born dead in sin, in need of the gospel. Awesome God will teach children the gospel, sowing seed for parents and churches to water and God to grow. Our church has already purchased ten copies to give away to unchurched families whose children attend our mid-week children’s ministry. Awesome God would make an excellent gift to give to churched and unchurched children in your neighborhood.
We first played our album in the car on the way to see family for Christmas. Our one year old was clapping along with the first song. Our three year old was making comments like, “They sing that song very nicely.” He memorized the chorus to one of the songs after having heard it twice. (I think that Dad enjoyed the CD as much as the boys did!)
In worship music, the tune should serve the text. This is modeled on Awesome God. Our children enjoyed the tunes, of which there is a good mixture of “fast” and “slow” (for lack of a more musically-correct term). These songs will engage young people, helping them to memorize the lyrics.
My favorite aspect of this album is its theological content. I have listed a summary of the message of each song below. This album clearly communicates the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The songs present a biblical vision of a God who is a good, all-powerful, all-knowing, loving, creating, redeeming and sovereign king whom we can trust with all that we have and desire with all that we are. The songs are deep without sacrificing simplicity. The songs are fun without reducing worship to silliness. A child who memorizes the lyrics of this album has been given a great foundation for building a faith-sustaining biblical theology. God alone is awesome. Use this album to teach that to your children.
Here is a list of the songs, along with my own summary of each song’s message:
Almighty Creator
God is the Almighty Creator of the universe. He made everything to show His glory and bring Himself praise. We are created to worship, love and delight in the Lord.
Forever God
God is eternal. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. He never changes. (Or, as the chorus says, he goes “on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on.”) Though everything else will fade away, God will always be the same.
You Are Always with Me
God knows everything about us, including our thoughts, words and deeds. We cannot escape His presence, no matter where we go. He is always at our side.
Who Is Like You?
No one is like God. It is amazing that He should know us and we know Him.
Sovereign One
Because God is both sovereign and good, I can trust in Him when I am afraid, when life is confusing, when I do not get my way, and when the tears roll down my face. He works all things according to His plan and holds all things in His hand.
Mighty Mighty Savior
This is my favorite song on the CD (for now). There is no one who is holy or righteous in God’s sight. No one is good or pure. Sin is too strong for us to defeat on our own. We are too weak to change our evil hearts. We need someone to save and purify us. Jesus died and rose again for helpless sinners. He is a mighty, might Savior who can wash away our sins and change us.
Jesus Came to Earth
A very simple presentation of the Gospel: “Jesus came to earth. He lived a perfect life. He died upon the cross. Then He rose from the dead. Now He is in heaven, seated on His throne, at the right hand of the Father, where heaven is His home.” A song of praise to Jesus, the Son of God and Son of Man, for leaving His throne to suffer for us.
Your Love
God’s love never ends. It lasts forever. There is no greater love than God’s love, which motivated Him to send His Son to die for our sin. Our loving God protects, corrects and directs us.
Three in One
A love song of praise to the Trinity.
The Father’s love and mercy moved Him to send His Son according to His eternal plan.
The Son, though the eternal King, became a man to serve all and to die according to His Father’s plan.
The Spirit brings the Good News to us, opening our eyes and hearts to see the Lord.
For You Are Holy
There is none like God. He is holy, utterly “set apart.”
The Gospel Song
Another simple presentation of the Gospel. The Holy God became perfect man to bear our blame by taking our sin on the cross. We live by His death.
Have You Heard?
This song ends the CD by asking, “Have you heard about Jesus? Do you know who He is?” It explains that Jesus is the King of Kings who died to save us from our sins. It is the best news we could ever hear: “by trusting in Jesus Christ, in His saving sacrifice, we can be made new.”

Amen, Eric. This is a wonderful CD that my wife and I greatly enjoy. While we are in the process of an international adoption from Kazahkstan, we are excited about introducing our little one to these songs in the months to come!
