Today is the 234th anniversary of the legal separation of the American colonies from Great Britain, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence, proposed in June. Congress would debate, revise and approve a declaration of independence on July 4, which would be signed by most of the delegates on August 2.
