Two worthwhile posts from Justin Taylor on critiquing another. Though mainly applied in the posts to journalism and theological critique, they are based on worthwhile principals for any realm of critique.
I'll list the main points below; follow the links to read the explanations.
The first post - "Four Things for Journalists to Remember in Covering Religious Beliefs They Disagree With:"
- ...conservative Christianity is a large and complicated world, and like other such worlds — the realm of the secular intelligentsia very much included — it has various centers and various fringes, which overlap in complicated ways.
- ...journalists should avoid double standards.
- ...journalists should resist the temptation to apply the language of conspiracy to groups and causes that they find unfamiliar or extreme.
- ... journalists should remember that Republican politicians have usually been far more adept at mobilizing their religious constituents than those constituents have been at claiming any sort of political “dominion.”
The second - "Three Things to Remember When Critiquing Someone's Theology:"
- Understand Before You Critique.
- Be Self-Critical.
- What the Alternative?
